Wednesday Wireless - Immanuel's Weekly News Update

Ash Wednesday, March 1

Ash Wednesday is next Wednesday, March 1. Imposition of Ashes will be held at Noon and 7pm in the church, and the church will be kept at a habitable temperature all day for those who wish to come and pray.

Pancake Supper

Lent Begins next week: Join us for Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, February 28, at 6pm ($5 for adults, $3 for children under 12).

Three Baritones and a Tenor

Three Baritones and a Tenor will perform at 7 p.m. March 4 in the church. The program will consist of classical songs, spirituals and Broadway music. The performance in the historic church is part of the Music in the Old Church outreach music ministry. A reception featuring savory and sweet pies follows the hour-long performance. For more information, visit or call the Parish Office at (804) 779-3454. Tickets, which support community music enrichment, are $15 per person at the door; $7 for students.

Performers are DeVonté Saunders, a Virginia Commonwealth University senior who has sung leads in the VCU Opera Theater and who studied at the University of Vienna in Austria; and baritones Chase Peak, a VCU graduate who has performed with the Virginia Opera and the Capitol Opera; John Tyndall, a VCU graduate who was a staff soloist at the Riverside Presbyterian Church in NYC and who now sings with the Virginia Chorale, and Jim Smith-Parham, who has sung many musical and operatic roles at the Virginia Opera, Barksdale Theatre and Swift Creek Theatre. He was stage director, accompanist and teacher at Operafestival di Roma, in Rome, Italy. He teaches voice at VCU and at the University of Richmond.

The accompanist is well-known organist and pianist Charles Lindsey, music director at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Petersburg.

This Sunday's Music

This coming Sunday is the Last Sunday in Epiphany.  We will celebrate the transfiguration of Christ on the mountain top and also the last Sunday we can express Alleluia between the start of Lent and Easter.  The offertory anthem is Christ Upon the Mountain Stands by Robert Lehman and Mark Schweizer. This anthem is in hymn form with an exciting descant of Alleluias on the last verse.  The communion anthem is Alleluia by William Boyce, written in the 1700s.  This is a fun piece with the main theme in unison then the different voices singing in canon form from different parts of the sanctuary.  It is a very exciting piece and will fill our church with lots of Alleluias!

Search Committee Update

The Search Committee is reviewing information submitted by interested clergy. We invite the parish to pray for us as this is our work together. Dear Lord, Surround us this night with your abundant love. Guide our hearts and minds in a way that is pleasing to you. Give us patience to do your work, wisdom to seek the desires of our congregation, and the ability to use the gifts you provide us in our search for a new rector. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen. The Search Committee: Jim Trimble, Whitney Anderson, Pat Cowling, Boo Elmore, Suzy Miller, Alex Wilson, and Nerine Woodard.

There are many families out there who need food, and CornerStone Food Bank folks work hard to help as many as possible! February's suggested items are meat stew, vegetables, & soup. March's suggested items are canned meats, beans, and soup.

Parish House Security

Keyholders, please be sure you still have your access code and instructions (see Britton Trimble in the Parish Office for a replacement if needed). Please don't trust your memory -  take a moment to review your code and the steps to disarm the security system before you unlock the Parish House door.

If you are the last person to leave the Parish House, it's up to you to lock up and arm the security system.  Please make sure all of the doors in the Parish House are closed and locked! If the system only beeps once when you try to arm it instead of starting the 45 second countdown of beeps, it's not armed. Pull the main door more tightly closed, stand still in front of the alarm panel for a few moments, and try again.  If you set off the alarm by mistake, please call Britton Trimble, Parish Administrator immediately at 814-7342. Please call Britton if you have trouble arming the system.
