Music

Make A Joyful Noise!

Jimmy Hicks Choir Director

Immanuel's music program is considered one of the church's greatest assets. Jimmy Hicks, our minister of music and an expert in music education, performance and theater, works with the rector to coordinate Sunday music selections with the readings, Gospel, sermon topics and church season.

The congregation sings from The Hymnal, Lift Every Voice and Sing, Songs for the Cycle and Gather.  Each service is accompanied by organ or piano music. A flute is often played during the Eucharist, and other instruments are occasionally played for special services. You won't want to miss these two special Sunday services that are coming up:

  • On Sunday, May 22 during the 10 a.m. service of Holy Eucharist, we'll welcome the Fox Sisters as guest musicians and sing two pieces from Robert Ray's Gospel Mass as we celebrate the commissioning of our Search Committee and the 30th anniversary of the ordination of our Interim Rector, the Rev. Charles Spigner.
  • On Sunday, June 12, we'll sing Martin Völlinger's A Latin Jazz Mass during our 10 a.m. service of Holy Eucharist.  Immanuel's choir is extremely excited to be one of the first choirs in the United States to sing this wonderful music!

The choir meets on Wednesdays from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m., from September to June, to prepare anthems and psalms that are sung during the Sunday service. New members are always welcome. For additional information about participating in this wonderful ministry, please contact Jimmy Hicks or the Parish Office.

Immanuel ChoirImmanuel also presents “Music In The Old Church", a popular choral concert series offered as an outreach ministry to the greater RIchmond community. The concert is held in the fall, and offers a mixture of sacred and secular music. Talented singers and musicians from dozens of churches throughout the Richmond area participate along with professional artists and special guests. Performances are offered at a variety of locations.
