Wednesday Wireless - Immanuel's Weekly News Update

Update on Charlie Spigner & Help with Food!

Charlie is glad to be home and is on the road to recovery. We will welcome supply priests for the next few Sundays so he has a chance to recover fully. We are postponing the Blessing of the Animals, which was originally scheduled for October 8, so Charlie doesn't have to worry about being knocked around too soon in his recovery.

Charlie and Elizabeth will have family visiting them for the upcoming weekend, and would love some help with food.  They'd welcome fixings for sandwiches (meats, cheese, and bread), macaroni salad, macaroni and cheese, potato salad, fruit, and homemade cookies to last them through the weekend. Charlie does not have any dietary restrictions. If you can help, please let Britton Trimble know (immanoch@verizon.net or 779-3454), and please bring the food to the Parish Office by Friday morning, September 16. Britton will leave the Parish House around noon on Friday to take the food to the Spigners.

Walk in Love Kickoff Brunch this Sunday!

This year's program and theme is Walk in Love. Those three words are the beginning of the sentence we often hear spoken at the Offertory during the service of Holy Eucharist. Our stewardship season begins on this coming Sunday, September 18 with a kickoff brunch and Pledge Card pickup. We invite you to pray for Immanuel as we prepare our church for 2017.

Scout House Cleanup

A clean up of the scout house interior and exterior is being led by the Venture Scouts (older co-ed scouts) and their parents as a service project to Immanuel. Any Immanuel members who would like to help with this effort are welcome to participate on Saturday 9/17 beginning at 8:00am.

Cub Scout Corner

Immanuel's Cub Scout Pack will be having a recruitment open house on Sunday, October 9, 4:00 to 6:00pm in Immanuel's Parish House.  Please encourage any families with sons ages 1st thru 5th grade to attend and consider joining the cub scouts.  Families living in Old Church or nearby are most likely to be interested in this.

Cub Scout Calendar for September:

  • 9/18 - car wash fundraiser EVB building across from West Store
  • 9/20 - 6:30 parents/leader meeting (nursery)
  • 9/27 - 6:30 pack meeting with awards

Stevi B's Fundraiser for the Pilgrimage

Enjoy Stevi B's pizza (9158 Atlee Rd., Mechanicsville, 23116) and help the 2017 Liverpool-Virginia Pilgrimage! On September 20, 5-9pm, the Pilgrimage will get 10% of all dine in, take out, and token sales.  Just be sure to mention Immanuel Episcopal Church Youth to the cashier.

Adult Christian Education

Adult Christian Education resumes on Sunday, September 25, following refreshments. Join us as we view and discuss a DVD series, Walking the Bible: A Journey by Land Through the Five Books of Moses. Author Bruce Feiler will take us on an amazing journey to sites of Biblical stories such as Mt. Ararat, the Temple Mount, Mt. Sinai, and St. Catherine's Monastery. Along the way, we'll meet local tour guides, archaeologists, monks, Bedouins, and tribal leaders.  As our host deepens in his faith, we will have the opportunity to explore our own.  No outside reading is required for this series, but you may want to begin reading Genesis in preparation. There is a companion book available. Contact Joan Beal for more information.

Music in the Old Church Returns on October 15

The next Music in the Old Church concert, Songs for the Soul will be held on October 15, 2016 at 4pm at Church of the Holy Comforter, 4819 Monument Ave., Richmond. This year's concert will include music from a variety of composers, and features the beautiful Requiem for the Living by Dan Forrest.  The choir will be accompanied by a ten piece professional orchestra.  If you have questions, or would like to sing, please contact Minister of Music Jimmy Hicks to learn more. Rehearsals are underway!

Yoga at Immanuel!

We had a great turnout for our first class! Come join us for Integral Hatha Yoga on Tuesdays, 4:45 pm - 5:45pm, beginning September 13. The recommended donation is $12. Beginner to intermediate levels are welcome; please bring your own mat. The class is being taught by Martha Childress, RYT 200. Martha has taken 200 hours of training to become certified to teach Yoga through the Integral school, which was founded by Sri Swami Satchidananda, who stated the goal of Yoga is "an easy body, a peaceful mind and a useful life." Contact Martha at c88c88@aol.com if you have questions.

Update: Parish House Security System

Keyholders, please be sure you still have your access code and instructions (see Britton Trimble in the Parish Office for a replacement if needed). We've set off several false alarms recently by inputting the wrong code. After 3 false alarms, the Hanover Sheriff's Office will charge us. Please don't trust your memory -  take a moment to review your code and the steps to disarm the security system before you unlock the Parish House door.

If you are the last person to leave the Parish House, it's up to you to lock up and arm the security system.  If the system only beeps once when you try to arm it instead of starting the 45 second countdown of beeps, it's not armed. Pull the main door more tightly closed, stand still in front of the alarm panel for a moment, and try again.  If you set off the alarm by mistake, please call Britton Trimble, Parish Administrator immediately at 814-7342. Please call Britton if you have trouble arming the system.

Attention Past and Current Shawl Knitters

If you have any leftover Homespun yarn that you would be willing to consider contributing to a "shawl of many colors" prayer shawl(s) that will be constructed of all of our offerings, please bring it to church or drop it by the parish house during office hours. It's a great way use up the leftovers and create a unique shawl with many blessings for its wearer.

Parish Office Hours

The Parish Office hours are generally Mondays-Thursdays, 9am-1pm and 2pm-4pm.

BBQ and Oyster Roast and Auctions

Generic letters you can take to businesses to ask for donations are ready! You may get them from the table in the Parish House entryway. Tickets will go on sale in the early fall, and we'll let you know when that happens.

Instead of steak, which can be difficult to cook to suit since nearly everyone like theirs cooked a certain and slightly different way, we're going to try out serving homemade barbecue along with the oysters.  It'll still be held on the first Saturday in November, we'll still have the Silent and Live Auctions, and of course we'll still be roasting oysters.

Church Inventory - We Need Your Help!

Carol Joyce is leading the effort to update and organize Immanuel's list of assets. In order to do that, we need to inventory all of our physical assets.   If you would like to help, please contact Carol Joyce at ccjoyce63@gmail.com.

Prayer List Update

Our prayer list is very long, and we are in the process of bringing it up to date.  So, please submit the name(s) of people who still need to be on the list, or people who can be removed. You can do this by filling out a Prayer List Update Card (available in the church and in the Parish House)  and placing it in the plate or returning it to the Parish Office. Thank you.

Donations for CornerStone

Fish, vegetables, and beans are the suggested donations for September. Thanks for all that you do to help those in need!

Shop at Kroger, Help Immanuel!

Have you tried registering your Kroger Card with the Kroger Rewards program? It's a very easy way to benefit Immanuel, and not many of us are doing it. All you have to do is register your Kroger Plus Card, choose Immanuel (Kroger organization number 82682) under Community Rewards, and whenever you shop at Kroger Immanuel will get a small percentage back. See Britton Trimble in the Parish Office for more information. Britton will even help you log in and set it up!
