Wednesday Wireless - Immanuel's Weekly News Update
Parish Office Hours This Week
Britton Trimble, the Parish Administrator, is on vacation October 1-8. Thanks to Nerine Woodard, who is in the office 9am-Noon, October 3-6.
Britton is generally in the office Mondays-Thursdays, 9am-4pm. She usually takes a 1pm-2pm lunch break.
Charlie Spigner's Anticipated Return
Charlie is recovering well from his double bypass surgery. He anticipates returning to church on Sunday, October 16.
Blessing of the Animals Postponed
Blessing of the Animals, originally scheduled for October 8, has been postponed.
Cherub School's Great Start
The Cherub School is off to a great start! We continue to see an increase in our enrollment, currently we have 67 students registered and expect a few more to add on this fall. Our maximum enrollment is 78, so we really aren't far from being completely full! There are many new families in our community and they have found their way to Cherub. We also continue to pull students from New Kent, King William, and even some from Sandston!
We currently have 5 teachers and 2 assistants. We are happy to welcome April Miller as our newest teacher. April was a parent last year and we are pleased to have her on staff this year. She brings 10 years of experience to our program. We have had several staff changes in the past few years but are fortunate to always have a list of possible candidates hoping for an opening. The school is blessed to have such a qualified, loving group of teachers serving our families. They are what gives Cherub such a wonderful reputation.
It is a busy place around here but everyone seems to be adjusting well. We did have some tears the first day, but we are seeing fewer and fewer all the time. More than tears we are seeing lots of smiles, hearing lots of laughter, and receiving lots of hugs!! What a wonderful experience it is to come to work everyday and know that there are multiple hugs coming your way. I can't imagine a more rewarding job.
Thank you Immanuel for continuing to provide this ministry to our community. It is a blessing to work in such a rewarding, loving environment and to be able to meet the needs of these families in our community. Without this ministry many of these families would not be able to afford to send their children to preschool. The experiences we provide these children help them to develop social experiences, independence, as well as the academic skills necessary for kindergarten. We are thankful that 28 years ago Immanuel recognized this need and took the steps to make this school a reality. May God continue to bless us and give the school many more years of happy Cherubs!

Strong Backs and Two Trucks Needed for Music in the Old Church Prep
Several strong backs and a couple of trucks are needed to help prepare for the Music in the Old Church Concert. We need your help moving risers from Tucker High School to Holy Comforter Episcopal Church around 1pm on October 12, and from Holy Comforter to Tucker early on October 17. If you can help, please let Jimmy Hicks know!
Adult Christian Education is Back!
Adult Christian Education follows refreshments on Sundays. Join us as we view and discuss a DVD series, Walking the Bible: A Journey by Land Through the Five Books of Moses. Author Bruce Feiler will take us on an amazing journey to sites of Biblical stories such as Mt. Ararat, the Temple Mount, Mt. Sinai, and St. Catherine's Monastery. Along the way, we'll meet local tour guides, archaeologists, monks, Bedouins, and tribal leaders. As our host deepens in his faith, we will have the opportunity to explore our own. No outside reading is required for this series, but you may want to begin reading Genesis in preparation. There is a companion book available. Contact Joan Beal for more information. On October 9, the group will meet in the Parish House Library.
Pot Luck Luncheon and Planned Giving Presentation
On Sunday, October 9, the Stewardship Committee will be offering a brief presentation on planned giving in the Parish House following the Sunday service. It is open to all who are interested in learning about different ways to make gifts to the programs and ministries of Immanuel. In lieu of refreshments, everyone is asked to bring a dish to share for a pot luck lunch that will precede the presentation and Adult Christian Education. Join us!
Music in the Old Church Returns on October 15
The next Music in the Old Church concert, Songs for the Soul will be held on October 15, 2016 at 4pm at Church of the Holy Comforter, 4819 Monument Ave., Richmond. The class is being taught by Martha Childress, RYT 200. Update: Parish House Security System
Keyholders, please be sure you still have your access code and instructions (see Britton Trimble in the Parish Office for a replacement if needed). We've set off several false alarms recently by inputting the wrong code. After 3 false alarms, the Hanover Sheriff's Office will charge us. Please don't trust your memory - take a moment to review your code and the steps to disarm the security system before you unlock the Parish House door.
If you are the last person to leave the Parish House, it's up to you to lock up and arm the security system. If the system only beeps once when you try to arm it instead of starting the 45 second countdown of beeps, it's not armed. Pull the main door more tightly closed, stand still in front of the alarm panel for a moment, and try again. If you set off the alarm by mistake, please call Britton Trimble, Parish Administrator immediately at 814-7342. Please call Britton if you have trouble arming the system.
Attention Past and Current Shawl Knitters
If you have any leftover Homespun yarn that you would be willing to consider contributing to a "shawl of many colors" prayer shawl(s) that will be constructed of all of our offerings, please bring it to church or drop it by the parish house during office hours. It's a great way use up the leftovers and create a unique shawl with many blessings for its wearer.
Donations for CornerStone
Fish, vegetables, and beans are the suggested donations for September. Thanks for all that you do to help those in need!
Shop at Kroger, Help Immanuel!
Have you tried registering your Kroger Card with the Kroger Rewards program? It's a very easy way to benefit Immanuel, and not many of us are doing it. All you have to do is register your Kroger Plus Card, choose Immanuel (Kroger organization number 82682) under Community Rewards, and whenever you shop at Kroger Immanuel will get a small percentage back.
