Wednesday Wireless - Immanuel's Weekly News Update

From the Rector: February 2018

I highlight two exciting events on our calendar. First, on Sunday, February 11th, join us for Jazz Sunday which promises to be a fun, upbeat service of worship. Second, on Tuesday, February 13th, we will have our annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper. These two events round out the Epiphany season as we walk ever closer towards Lent.

Onto the topic of Lent, it is typical for Christians around the world to give up something during Lent. This is appropriate because Lent is a season of fasting - bookended by the two fast days of Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Consider what you might give up for Lent.

Consider also what you might take on during Lent. In addition to our Sunday morning worship, I offer a few suggestions among our several offerings at Immanuel. You could attend our Sunday Adult Formation program, led by Joan Beal, that takes place right after worship in the Library of the Parish House. You could commit to a special contemplative prayer offering led by Betty Booker Morriss on Tuesday evenings in Lent. Or you could join us for a trip to St. Paul's in Richmond on a weekday for their Lenten series.

Whatever you give up or take on for Lent, I encourage you to live into the self-offering that shapes the season of Lent. As always, I look forward to seeing you on Sunday and at our many other parish events these coming weeks.

Faithfully,
Chris

Music in the Old Church Presents: Three Sopranos and a Pianist

This concert of Songs of Love, Longing, and Laughter from around the World will be held on Saturday, February 3 at 7pm at Immanuel. Come and join sopranos Anne O'Byrne, Lisa Edwards-Burrs, and Gabrielle Maes along with pianist Charles Staples on a journey of well-loved songs from many countries. These folk songs, art songs, spirituals, opera, and Broadway songs will touch your souls and lift your spirits. Tickets, which will be sold at the door, are $25 per couple or $15 per person.

Choir

Have you ever thought about joining the choir? If so, now is the perfect time! The choir is currently rehearsing at 9:15 AM on Sunday mornings right before worship. You don't need to commit beyond one Sunday at a time. Show up, get a choir robe, and have fun with fellow choir members. If you have any questions, just ask one of the choir members in the blue and white robes after church.

Valentine's Tea for "All the Single Ladies" of Immanuel

Lindsay Ryland will host a Valentine's Tea at her home for all of the single ladies of Immanuel on Sunday, February 11 at 3:00 PM. Ladies are invited to bring a teatime snack to share. For more information or to RSVP, please email Lindsay at clryland@aol.com.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper

At 5:30 PM on Tuesday, February 13 we will have our annual Shrove Tuesday pancake supper in the parish house. Pancakes, sausage, milk, coffee, and juice will be served. The cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Come as you are and join us for fellowship before we enter the season of Lent.

Ash Wednesday

At 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 14 we will have a service of Holy Eucharist with the Imposition of Ashes. Please join us for this important day in the church year as we begin our journey through Lent together.

Shrine Mont Parish Retreat

Our annual Shrine Mont Parish Retreat is scheduled for Friday, May 18 to Sunday, May 20. The theme for our retreat is Shrine Mont 101. We will have time to relax, time to pray, and time to come to know Shrine Mont better. Estimated costs are $100 per person per night for a single and $76 per person per night for a double. Children 3 and under are free and children 4-12 are $30 per child per night. Please email Britton Trimble at btrimble@immanueloc.org to reserve your spot. Please speak with David Jennings if you have any questions about the retreat.

Adult Formation

Our current adult formation study, An Overview of the Book of Common Prayer, continues on Sundays. For more info about the class, contact Joan Beal.

Godly Play

Godly Play meets on the first, third, and fifth Sundays of each month. It is a curriculum designed to help children explore faith through stories. Godly Play is open to 3 year olds up to 5th graders.

Nursery

We have a nursery available every Sunday during our 10 AM service. The nursery is located inside the Parish House building, next to the church.
